First Aid

Learn basic first aid skills from this introductory course that covers
time-sensitive, life threatening priorities. Skills include choking,

they need to respond to medical emergencies with confidence and care.
Topics include airway management, oxygen administration,
spinal immobilization, advanced patient assessments (blood pressures),
special populations, etc. Unique to Nova Scotia is the

First Responder option through Emergency
Health
Services
Nova Scotia. The provincial government, through it’s
medical director, supports the standard and if you are volunteering with a
fire service or other recognized agency you may qualify to apply for
this certification.

Automated External

Oxygen Administration
This course will give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to
provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices
including suction devices, oral and nasal airways, resuscitation masks,

Instructor Course
As a First Aid Instructor, you will be able to facilitate Canadian Red
Cross and CPR Programs including Emergency and Standard First Aid, CPR,
and Preventing Disease Transmission. By becoming a Canadian Red Cross
First Aid Instructor you may apply to be a facilitator for our Child
Care, Babysitter and PeopleSaver programs.

ABOUT THE FIRST AID INSTRUCTOR COURSE

32 hours in length, usually
scheduled over two weekends

Course subjects include applied
adult learning principles, student-centered styles of instruction,
presentation skills, lesson planning

Student presentations

Practice sessions in first aid and
CPR techniques
-
Written exam conducted at the end
of the core section with a minimum pass of 80 %.

Teach 100 % of a Standard First
Aid and CPR Level C course within six (6) months of the core
session, monitored by a Senior Instructor and/or Instructor Trainer.

Attend and participate in 100 % of
the First Aid Instructor Course, including the skills assessment
session.
