 Emergency First Aid with CPR & AED

Learn basic first aid skills from this introductory course that covers time-sensitive, life threatening priorities. Skills include choking, rescue breathing, CPR/AED for adults, infants and children. Plus, treatment for severe bleeding and how to perform a secondary survey. (more)

  Standard First Aid with CPR & AED

Learn all the skills taught in Emergency First Aid plus: recognition and treatment of Musculoskeletal, soft tissue, and head and spine injuries, heat and cold emergencies, poisonings, and medical conditions such as diabetic emergencies and convulsions. (more)

  First Aid Re-Certifications with CPR & AED

The re-cert includes practical skills evaluation and written or oral exam. Recommended every 2 years. Required every 3 years.

Time: 4 hours—Emergency First Aid with CPR & AED

           7 hours—Standard First Aid with CPR & AED

Fee:  Emergency First Aid - $35.00 Code: EFA Recert

          Standard First Aid - $60.00 Code: SFA Recert

Candidates are required to have the Red Cross  manual. Additional $30.00 to acquire the text.

  First Responder (+ NS Medical First Response Certification) with CPR & AED

First Responder is a comprehensive 40 - 44-hour course designed for "first responders" - those individuals most likely to be the first rescuers on the scene of an emergency. The program reflects the latest advances in first aid and CPR. First Responder provides primary rescuers with the information and skills they need to respond to medical emergencies with confidence and care.

Topics include airway management, oxygen administration, spinal immobilization, advanced patient assessments (blood pressures), special populations, etc. Unique to Nova Scotia is the Medical First Responder option through Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia. The provincial government, through it’s medical director, supports the standard and if you are volunteering with a fire service or other recognized agency you may qualify to apply for this certification.   Emergency Medical Responder with CPR & AED

Emergency Medical Responder the most complete and comprehensive training you can engage in before Para-medicine. This 80-hour course designed for those individuals that will called to be the first rescuers on the scene of an emergency. The program reflects the latest advances in first aid and CPR. EMR provides primary rescuers with the information and skills they need to respond to medical emergencies with confidence and care.

This program is the standard of care as defined under the Paramedic Association of Canada (PAC) and meets universally in Canada, National Occupational Competency Profiles (NOCP). As noted with the First Responder above, you also easily meet Nova Scotia Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia - Medical First Responder option criteria.  (more)

 Automated External Defibrillation

This course covers the operation and care of AEDs (automated external defibrillators). This course can stand alone or be added to First Responder or any other Red Cross First Aid course offered to the public or in the workplace. (more)

  Oxygen Administration

This course will give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices including suction devices, oral and nasal airways, resuscitation masks, bag-valve mask resuscitators, and use supplemental oxygen with adjuncts.   Marine Basic First Aid with CPR & AED

This course provides a comprehensive First Aid & CPR techniques with scenarios taken from the marine/fishing industry for individuals who need a basic training level in First Aid & CPR for the marine industry. The course covers a variety of topics from basic first aid such as cardiovascular emergencies for Adults, CPR Level A, and other topics including choking, airway and breathing emergencies and prevention of disease transmission and progresses to in-depth ones including sudden medical conditions and injuries to the head and spine (more)  MBFA is pursuant to federal regulation: TP13008E

  Marine Advanced First Aid with CPR & AED

Marine Advanced FA is a comprehensive 40 - 44-hour course designed for marine "first responders" - those individuals most likely to be the first rescuers on the scene of an emergency. The program reflects the latest advances in first aid and CPR. Akin to the First Responder level it provides primary rescuers with the information and skills they need to respond to medical emergencies with confidence and care.

Topics include airway management, oxygen administration, spinal immobilization, advanced patient assessments (blood pressures), special populations, etc.

MAFA is recently updated and pursuant to federal regulation: TP13008E

Time Frame: 31 - 40 hours (includes CPR level HCP)

 First Aid CPR & AED Instructor Course

As a First Aid Instructor, you will be able to facilitate Canadian Red Cross and CPR Programs including Emergency and Standard First Aid, CPR, and Preventing Disease Transmission. By becoming a Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor you may apply to be a facilitator for our Child Care, Babysitter and PeopleSaver programs. (more)

ABOUT THE FIRST AID INSTRUCTOR COURSE

 

  • 32 hours in length, usually scheduled over two weekends
  • Course subjects include applied adult learning principles, student-centered styles of instruction, presentation skills, lesson planning
  • Student presentations
  • Practice sessions in first aid and CPR techniques
  • Written exam conducted at the end of the core section with a minimum pass of 80 %.
  • Teach 100 % of a Standard First Aid and CPR Level C course within six (6) months of the core session, monitored by a Senior Instructor and/or Instructor Trainer.
  • Attend and participate in 100 % of the First Aid Instructor Course, including the skills assessment session.
